What Is Class Going to Be Like?

We’ll meet face-to-face Tuesdays from 4:30 – 7:00 each week. Class will start on time. At the beginning of each class, we’ll touch base about the work you’ve accomplished during the week. Some weeks we’ll all participate in an activity together. Sometimes I’ll have a brief mini-lecture about an issue related to making. We may even have a guest speaker or two. Then, you’ll have time to work in class to complete modules. Each class will wrap up with a debrief, where you can discuss what you worked on, show off anything you made, and ask questions related to your work.

You can work through modules independently, or you can work with your classmates on them (except where noted)… the choice is yours. However, even if you work cooperatively on a module with one or more classmates, you will still be responsible for demonstrating that you can complete the concluding activity independently.

You will be able to complete many of the modules outside of class. Some of them, however, involve using specialized equipment (like, for example, a 3D printer or a laser cutter) that you will only be able to access in the classroom. So, you’ll need to develop a plan after the first couple of weeks, and use class time to work on modules that you can’t complete outside of class.

Between class meetings, it is up to you to choose modules to work on. After you complete and submit the activity at the end of the module, Lia or I will look at your work and provide feedback (where appropriate). You’ll then receive an email that you have earned credit for completing the module. It’ll also include any feedback.

Some weeks you’ll have a homework assignment that you need to complete before the next class meeting.
